What preparation requires carotid angioplasty with stenting

Carotid angioplasty with stenting is a non-surgical medical procedure, through which vascular surgeons "release" the occluded or severely restricted carotid arteries.

This dangerous pathological condition - which in medical language is defined as obstructive disease of the carotid arteries - is a possible consequence of atherosclerosis and may be the basis of episodes of ischemic stroke or TIA ( transient ischemic attack ).

From the point of view of preparation, carotid angioplasty with stenting provides some simple medical indications, but it is good to follow the letter if everything is to proceed for the best and without complications.

Going into more detail ...

In the weeks leading up to the procedure, the patient must undergo several diagnostic imaging tests - such as carotid ultrasound, carotid angiography, angio-CT and / or angio-magnetic resonance. These tests serve to show the characteristics and the exact position of the obstructive plaque (plaque which is generally called an atheroma ).

Therefore, a few days before surgery (usually 3-5 days before), the patient must start a therapy based on antiplatelet agents (for example aspirin), in order to reduce the formation of blood clots during angioplasty.

Finally, on the day of the procedure, he must appear in complete fasting at least the previous evening and accompanied by a relative or trusted friend.
